Medium cream Icelandic bark-tanned sheepskin

$330.00

The magic: I grew up on a sheep farm in Forest Grove, which my mom continues to operate. She keeps a small flock, just 8 sheep, and raises them for meat, which is sold to longtime customers once a year. I am proud to be offering sheepskins after many years of searching for a place to get the hides tanned. The day the lambs are dispatched by a local butcher who comes to the farm, the hides are salted and then mailed to the tannery.

Ingredients: This hide was tanned by the lovely folks at Traditional Tanners down in Ashland, OR. You can read more about the process here. It was tanned with the following certified organic ingredients:

  • Tan oak bark

  • Olive oil

  • Egg yolks

  • Citric Acid

  • Salt

  • Vinegar

  • Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Soap

Dimensions: This hide measures approximately 48”long by 30” wide (measured in the middle). This sheep was an Icelandic, which are more petite than the rest of the flock (who are a Dorset/Romney blend)

Care: For routine care, vacuum sheepskin, shake it out, and/or air it out in the sun to freshen up. This sheepskin is machine washable - it is recommended to wash with cold water, using a wool-friendly soap, and then air dry (best to do this in warmer weather so it dries faster). Spraying with a solution of 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water will help condition the wool and help it dry soft. You can use a pet brush to comb through the wool, but keep in mind that some debris in the wool is normal and part of the charm as it reminds us of the fields and grasses the sheep roamed in throughout it’s life.

Each hide is one of a kind and may have slight irregularities in symmetry, wool density, etc. This is normal and natural.
